Studies
Subject: Hawaiian Culture and Language
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the language
and culture of the Hawaiian people. Attention will be focused
on the basic vocabulary and structure of the language, structure
of traditional society, traditional philosophies, and their
relevance to contemporary society.
Course
Goals and Objectives: By the end of the semester, the student
will:
1) have a knowledge of, and respect for, the culture and traditions
of the Hawaiian people,
2) have a basic understanding of the Hawaiian language,
3) have learned how to use various resource materials for future
research, and
4) will have developed the ability to apply skills learned within
class into the larger community.
Grading
Procedures: Points will accumulate during the course for final
grades. All assignments are given point values with quizzes,
tests, and projects having a higher value than class and home
work. Grades will be based on the grading scale as follows:
A = 90 – 100%
B = 80 – 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60 – 69%
F = 59% and below
Attendance: Attendance procedures are based on the guidelines
set forth in the Student/Parent Handbook. Students who are tardy
will receive a warning for their first offense; all subsequent
offenses will result in detention.
Class
Rules: Students will be expected to exemplify the seven Hawaiian
and Christian values of the Kamehameha Schools. The primary
value upon which student conduct and behavior will be based
is Aloha. Therefore, students will:
1) respect themselves, their classmates, teachers, and adults,
2) be prompt and prepared for class,
3) participate in class,
4) follow all school policies and rules, and
5) be examples of fine young men and young women as befitting
the 'ohana of the Kamehameha Schools.
