Our Fabulous
First Graders!

Aloha
and Welcome First Grade Family and Friends,
We're off to a great start! It's such a joy to come to school
and to work with your child! First grade is a big stepping
stone. It's a year of exploring new things and putting things
into practice. It's also a year of becoming more independent.
We're still establishing our routines and the students are
quickly learning the new six-day cycle of classes.
Each
child brings great diversity into our classroom and it's wonderful
to see them work together, help each other, iron out differences,
and share what they know with the rest of the class.
Communication
between us is really important. I won't know your questions
or concerns unless you let me know. I am here to work with
you for the benefit of your child. Being a mother myself,
I know how special your child is to you, and how much you
want them to learn and grow academically and socially.
I
look forward to working with you as we work together and support
each other on your child's educational journey this year!

Homework:
Homework
will be given on Monday through Thursday. Homework is an extension
and provides practice for what is learned in the classroom.
It will basically consist of a workbook page, or a worksheet
that will all be stapled together as a "homework packet".
Your child should know how to do his/her work. It should not
take more than 15 minutes. You may check the assignments and
provide ideas and suggestions for improvement, but please
DO NOT do your child's work. If it is obvious that your child
has not grasped the concept to complete the assignment accurately,
leave it as it is - it'll be a good indication to me to cover
it more. In addition to the worksheet, your child should also
be spending about 10 minutes each day to read or be read to.
Spelling words should also be studied daily. Our goal for
spelling is to have your child identify these words in their
reading, as well as to be able to utilize them in their writings.
There will be several family projects that the whole family
can work on. You will be notified of these projects in advance.
Parent
Expectations:
You are
the most important role model in your child's life. They will
follow your example in how they view the importance of education.
Their attendance and being responsible in their behavior and
study habits is crucial in their success as a learner. Help
them be prepared for the next day by making sure that homework
is done and that their things are organized the night before.
Help them organize their time so that they have a well-balanced
schedule of educational pursuits, leisure activities, and
family time. Encourage them to share their day with you. Go
over the classwork that they bring home. Every day your child
will fill out an evaluation form. This form will indicate
how their day went in social and academic areas. Please look
over it every day and initial it. Praise them for their efforts.
Feel free to communicate with me on the communication form.
Important
things to remember:
*Check
homework folder daily for forms that need to be filled out
and returned. Check homework.
*Review
and initial evaluation form.
*Encourage
your child to practice healthy habits so that absences are
at it's minimum.
