Course Goals
1. Students will build their Hawaiian vocabulary and communication
abilities through the medium of Hawaiian language.
2. Students will learn traditional and contemporary Hawaiian
mele, oli, hula, and protocol and appropriate application
of their learning.
3. Students will learn, identify and execute traditional and
contemporary hula steps.
4. Students will be introduced to appropriate Hawaiian dance
implements/instruments and their proper uses.
5. Students will record, collect, organize, and secure all
chants, dances, and protocol into a writing tablet/book.
Performance Objectives
1. Students will be able to communicate in Hawaiian during
entire semester, therefore becoming bilingual.
2. Students will perform mele, oli and hula taught by memory.
3. Students will be required to participate in a public performance(s).
4. Students will be assessed throughout the semester through
both written and performance tests.
Grading Policy
Grades will be determined by averaging class participation,
class work, as well as performance and written test scores.
90% (+) and above A
80% (+) and above B
70% (+) and above C
60% (+) and above D
59% (-) and below F
Late Class Work
All class work turned in after the due date will not be accepted.
Class Participation
Students who are consistently tardy will receive a reduction
in class participation points. This
Hawaiian cultural class is required and students must participate
in order to learn.
Make Up Tests and Assignments
This type of work will only be given at the request of the
student or parent for excused absences or tardies.
Other Requirements
Each student will need a composition book for this class.
Students will be required to write Hawaiian phrases, poetry,
and lyrics of the Hawaiian language, mele, oli as well as
other cultural notes/information in this book.
Another requirement is for students
to memorize all oli, mele, hula, and procedures of protocol
in preparation for their application in any upcoming performance(s).
