Kamehameha Summer Program, Explorations
Hula Instructor
Description of Position:
Hired as a Hula Instructor for Ho'omäka'ika'i (Explorations Program). Everyday for 6 weeks, we taught the children (grades 5-6) hula. On day 1, they learned a brief history of the hula. They were then taught 2 songs, one kahiko and one 'auana, that they would dance at the Friday night hö'ike. The children learned a hula kahiko in honor of Pauahi that was performed with an ipu heke 'ole (which they made) as a hula noho (sitting dance). The hula 'auana they learned was also done as a hula noho, each group having a different hula implement: ka lä'au, pü'ili, ipu heke 'ole, 'ulï'ulï, and 'ili'ili.
Highlights:
Every afternoon we would take a different group of children to Mauna'ala, the Royal Mausoleum in Nu'uanu. It was a special time for all of us, students and staff, to offer our aloha to Pauahi and all the other ali'i buried there.

In the afternoon, we took a different group of children (approx. 52) to the Bishop Museum Planetarium to view a show on canoe voyaging through the Pacific by star navigation. After the show, we took the group to Ala Moana beach park where we would 1) teach them how to paddle a canoe, and 2) play the Hawaiian games 'ulu maika and moa pahe'e.
Highlights:
At the end of each week, there was a hö'ike or show where the children would perform everything they had learned that week for their family and friends. It was an exciting time for all.

Our summer session class of approximately 17 students participated in a weekend camping trip at Makaha, O'ahu. The students pitched their own tents, cooked their own meals, and communicated only in their 'ölelo makuahine. There was a lot of laughter, games, skits, and music. A truly wonderful experience that I will always cherish.
