Course Description
            The major content areas to be covered this semester include pre-contact society, the arrival of the haole, our monarchs, the overthrow, the Hawaiian Renaissance, modern Hawaiian issues and civic responsibility.

Goals
            Learn how our history as Hawaiians affects us today.
            Learn to critically analyze and discuss historical interpretations of Hawaiians & H. culture.
            Learn to formulate and express opinions on relevant contemporary issues.
            Learn the value of being active, contributing citizens.
           
Emphasis
                        Emphasis will be placed on preparing all haumäna for college or the workplace by developing skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing and reporting.

            The midterm book review is due at the beginning of class on 10/17/08. Specific guidelines for the book review are forthcoming.

Textbook
            Shoal of Time ~ Gavan Daws

            Each student will be assigned a numbered text. Most reading assignments will be done in class. The text may be taken home when necessary. Students are asked to keep it in good condition. Students are responsible for lost or damaged books.

           
Grading Policy
The standard KSM grading scale will be used. The final grade is the sum of all points accumulated throughout the semester.
Grades will be uploaded to KS Connect every two weeks. A student receiving a C- or below will also be given a progress report to be signed by his/her makua and returned the following class period.

 

Missing Work
The student is responsible for scheduling make-up quizzes and assignments in a timely manner.  (Within a 1 week of returning to school). Only students with excused absences will be allowed to make up missing work.

 

Attendance
Attendance procedures are based on the guidelines set forth in the Student/Parent Handbook. Students who are tardy will receive a warning for their first offense; all subsequent offenses will result in loss of participation points.

 

Participation Points (+/-)
Extra credit points may be earned by raising meaningful, thoughtful & relevant questions that spark class discussions and/or by freely sharing thoughts, opinions & ideas that help to develop a dynamic learning environment.
Points will be deducted for disregarding class rules.

 

Class Rules
All are expected to exemplify Hawaiian and Christian values with primary emphasis placed on the value ~ aloha defined as beloved, loving, kind, compassionate, charitable, lovable; to love, be fond of; to show kindness, mercy, pity, charity, affection; to venerate; to remember with affection; to greet, hail. If each of us comes from a place of aloha, everything else – respect, attentiveness, proper behavior, etc. will also fall into place.

 

Office Hours
All students are welcome to meet with me during office hours, or by appointment. Office hours are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:40 – 3:30 p.m.
