Middle School Practices

Kamehameha Schools - Maui Campus has implemented a Middle School philosophy, which includes team teaching to improve student achievement. This policy allows teachers to work together in developing consistent rules, consequences, and developed units that connect the core subject areas.

8th Grade Expectations

The 8th grade year is preparation for high school. The expectations for core courses will emphasize homework completion, class preparation & participation, and test preparedness and appropriate behavior in and out of class.

Our team follows the four universal Tribes Agreements which are: Mutual Respect, Attentive Listening, Show Appreciation - No Put-downs, and the Right to Participate. Students & teachers will abide by these agreements.

These expectations will be reinforced throughout the year through various means, reward activities and will be a part of their participation and preparation grade every quarter.

Team Planner Policy

  • Students are required to use their planner daily to record their assignments in all four of their core classes.
  • Teachers will stamp the planner with a green initial stamp to verify that students have written down their assignment daily.
  • A red “homework not done” stamp will be stamped over any incomplete or missing assignment.
  • Parents will be required to sign their child’s planner weekly and check regularly for messages sent home by teachers.
  • Students are required to show planner to teachers when messages are sent to school from parents.
  • We are hoping to increase students accountability and responsibility, as well as home-school communication with these efforts.
  • By second semester students will be fully responsible for planner use and home communication. Teachers may check and stamp planners at random.

Homework Policy

  • Homework assignments will be accepted at the beginning of the period on due dates only.
  • Homework is to be completed at home and not to be done during break periods or before school.
  • Copying of any assignments is unacceptable and will result in a ZERO for both parties involved and a major offense.
  • Late assignments will only be accepted with prior approval from teacher & parent signature on assignment.
  • More time for assignments will be given only when a student is absent or under special circumstances.
  • If you are absent, for any reason, you are responsible for all class work, homework quizzes, tests, etc. missed in class within 3 days of return. After that a zero will result.

Extra Help

  • If you have any problems or need extra help, you may see any of your core teachers during morning break periods or during your study skills class.
  • If you are falling behind it is better to get help right away rather than wait until you are completely lost.
  • We are more than willing to provide extra help to ensure your success.
  • After school tutoring is available, however, students must sign up for this service daily.

Classroom Rules

Respect yourself, Respect each other, and Respect this place.

  • Be in assigned seat ready to work at the beginning of class. No unexcused tardies.
  • Have all needed supplies everyday.
  • Keep hands, feet, books, objects to yourself.
  • No swearing, rude gestures, cruel teasing, or put downs.
  • Follow directions & Tribes Agreements.
  • Follow school dress code.
  • Be your Best! Make sure your work is neat, well done and on time.

We also enforce the school rules found in the student handbook. Please review these rules along with the dress code.

Grading Policy

All work is graded on a point system with points being given for: tests and quizzes, oral and written assignments, special projects, participation & preparation in other instructional activities.

The following scale will be used for grading:

97% - 100% = A+
93% - 96% = A
90% - 92% = A-
87% - 89% = B+
83% - 86% = B
80% - 82% = B-
77% - 79% = C+
73% - 76% = C
70% - 72% = C-
67% - 69% = D+
63% - 66% = D
60% - 62% = D-
59% and Below will result in an F.

Mid-Quarter progress reports will be sent home informing parents of student’s grades and any missing assignments at that time. In lieu of tests and quizzes being sent home, students will be required to keep & maintain a quarterly grade log recording all assignments. Students should have a grade log for each core class that they have. At any point (if maintained well) students or parents can calculate their current grade.

Course Descriptions

Language Arts - This course is designed to build upon previously learned Language Arts skills in order to provide students with the tools they will need to succeed in High School English and beyond. It emphasizes communication through the study of language and literature. Students will engage in skills-based reading, writing, speaking, and listening processes that reflect universal themes which empower people to be competent and successful communicators in a global community.

Social Studies - The Eighth Grade students will study United States History. The course begins with the five themes of geography where students will learn the importance of geography in shaping history. Students take responsibility in their own learning by creating projects, presenting information, and conducting research. Students’ extent of learning will include Native American groups, exploration from Europeans, settlement of the thirteen original colonies, birth of our nation, Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and into the twentieth century. Historical novels will coincide with the theme of U.S. History.

Math - This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to strengthen and extend their background in mathematics to include the real number system and concepts of algebra and geometry. Instructional practices will actively involve students in exploring, conjecturing, analyzing, and applying mathematics in both real-world and mathematical contexts and in communicating mathematical ideas.

Science
- From geology to oceanography, astronomy to paleontology, students will learn about past, present, and what the future holds for planet Earth. The contents of this Earth Science course will cover earth materials, the changing surface of the earth and its internal processes. The atmosphere, it’s varied weather patterns and climates along with a unit covering oceanography and astronomy will also be covered.

Team Units of Study (IDUs - Interdisciplinary Units)

This year students will be working on 4 units of study involving all four core subject areas. The purpose of these units are to build connections between core subject area to improve learning. Team units for this year are True Colors, Careers, Lift off to learning (Space Exploration) and 'Ike Hawaii.

Portfolios

All 8th grade students will have a portfolio displaying their achievements throughout the year. A binder will be provided by the school to house these materials and the portfolio will travel with the students to 9th grade.

Merit / Reward Activities

  • A Merit Activity will be planned every quarter to reward students for their hard work and appropriate behavior.
  • Students who follow all expectations and rules satisfactorily will be allowed to participate in this activity.
  • We will be especially monitoring these behaviors: unexcused tardies, dress code, inappropriate behavior, lack of respect, unprepardness, swearing and gum chewing.
  • If any of these behaviors are demonstrated a student will be issued an infraction slip to complete and return.
  • Advisory teachers will keep track of how many slips are accumulated for each student per quarter.
  • If three slips are issued, a Notice of Concern will be sent home to parents as well as to the office (to be kept in student file).
  • If six or more are issued within a quarter, a second Notice will be issued and that student will not be able to participate in that quarter’s Merit Activity.

Students may not attend quarterly merit activities for these reasons:

  • Six infraction slips earned within a quarter, a second Notice will be issued (if more than six pink slips are accumulated in any given quarter, a formal referral is submitted to administration).
  • Administrative intervention (major offense, detention, suspension, restriction, etc.)
  • Academic / Behavior probation.

Bonus Bucks

We use a reward for student academic and social behavior in the form of bonus bucks. Bonus bucks can be used for school supplies, other materials, rewards, and extra credit (at the discretion of the teacher).

Birthday Recognition

Each student on our team will receive a birthday recognition on his / her birth date. Students not born during the school calendar will receive their recognition at the beginning of the year.
