Social Studies
CURRICULUM:
The 7th grade curriculum will focus around
Pacific Island Studies. We will explore Polynesian, Melanesian,
and Micronesian nations in regards to history, geology, geography,
navigation, emigration, environmental issues, sovereignty, current
events, and economy. We will also cover the Hawaiian Monarchy
period from Kamehameha I to the Overthrow and analyze the effects
the explorers, traders, whaler missionaries, and immigrants
had upon Hawaiian History and culture. The semester will end
with the life of the founder of our school-Bernice Pauahi Bishop
and her legacy.
TEXTBOOK:
Pacific Nations and Territories: The Islands of Micronesia,
Melanesia, and Polynesia, by Reilly Ridgell and History
of the Hawaiian Kingdom by Norris W. Potter, Lawrence M.
Kasdon & Ann Rayson.
GRADING
POLICY: The following items will be assigned point values and
grades will be determined according to points possible and points
received.
*Homework/Class
Work- Homework and class work will be given on a continuous
basis. The assignments will be written daily on the board for
students to copy into their planners.

Quizzes/Tests- Quizzes and tests will be given periodically.
Students will be given adequate notice in order to prepare for
tests. Their Social Studies notebooks will be their main study
guide.
*
Projects- Students will have the opportunity to complete
various projects that will be a very integral part of the semester.
They will also have the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary
projects dealing with a common theme in more than one of their
classes.
*
Participation- Points will be given for participation
in the lesson and activities included.
*
Extra Credit- Extra credit will be made available at
a minimal basis.
