The function of the Kamehameha
Schools Maui Campus Band Program is to develop musical standards
and to impart a basis for value judgments, resulting in the
encouragement of sensitive musicianship with breadth, depth
and permanence. To foster the kind of music appreciation and
understanding that will be effective in the life of the student.
The KSMC Band Program will provide the student the opportunity
to learn how to play an instrument and perform in an ensemble,
balanced by attention to music theory, skill development, and
listening. The music experienced through participation will
instill lasting values, and that of enriching life.
The objective of the KSMC Band
Program is to develop in the student the ability to work effectively
through the acquisition of such traits as industry, persistence,
and eagerness to grow. A student will have the opportunity to
self-expression in music, a respect for and an appreciation
of outstanding cultural developments. Through music education
the student will acquire knowlege, skills, and attitudes which
will hlp to make him/her a more desirable member of society
Middle
School Beginning Band I (6th and 7th graders)
Prerequisites:
None
The Beginning Band course is designed to introduced
students to the following: basic instrumental music techniques
such as tone production, articulation, breath control, pitch
discrimination; music theory; melodic and rhythmic concepts
and patterns; practice skills and habits; solo, ensemble, and
full group rehearsals; a variety of instrumental repertoire;
opportunities for private instruction; experiences in performing;
and sound practice habits. School owned instruments are made
available to all students.
Middle
School Band II (7th & 8th Graders)
(Intermediate Band)
(Recommended Preparation: Beginning Band)
The Intermediate Band course is designed to
acquaint students with intermediate instrumental music skills
which include, but will not limited to, the following content:
intermediate to advanced level sight-reading skills; discrimination
of pitch; absolute essentials for playing in tune; intermediate
to advanced rhythm concepts and patterns; techniques for achieving
the essentials of unity, balance, and contrast in performing
instrumental music; the study of major and minor scales; the
opportunity of performing a variety of good musical repertoire;
and listening skills development. Admission and chair assignment
in Intermediate Band is by audition. The audition includes major
and chromatic scales in addition to sight-reading. Students
may also perform prepared repertoire. School owned instruments
are made available to all students.
High School Beginning
Band [4206]
Prerequisites:
None
The beginning Band is an opportunity for the
student who wants to learn how to play a woodwind, brass, or
percussion instrument. Student will learn the playing fundamentals
of the instrument, rudiments of music theory, and ear training.
Student will identify ways in which the principles and subject
matter of other disciplines taught in the school is interrelated
with music. Student will develop reading a playing skills while
rehearsing and performing in a concert. Students encouraged
to study privately and practice regularly to achieve high standards.
Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.
High School Concert Band [4209]
Prerequisites:
By audition/ teacher recommendation
This course will enable the student to rehearse
and perform a wide range of standard concert band literature.
Student must demonstrate a proficiency level that would enable
the student to be a contributing member of the band. Playing
fundamentals, major, minor and chromatic scales, rudiments of
music theory, and ear training will be emphasized. Concert Band
will perform at school concerts and music festivals. At times
during the year, the group breaks into small ensembles such
as jazz band, brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, etc. Student
is encouraged to study privately and practice regularly to achieve
high standards. Concert Band will combine with the Symphonic
Band to [form the "Kamehameha (Maui Campus) Warrior Marching
Band"] perform at parades, athletic events, and marching
festivals and competitions. Attendance at all rehearsals and
performances is required.
Freshmen Band

Prerequisites:
By audition/ teacher recommendation/ must be a Freshmen (9th
grade) have 1 or 2 years of experience on any band instrument.
This course will enable the student to rehearse
and perform a wide range of standard concert band literature.
Playing fundamentals, major, minor and chromatic scales, rudiments
of music theory, and ear training will be emphasized. Freshmen
Band will perform at school concerts and music festivals. At
times during the year, the group breaks into small ensembles
such as jazz band, brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, etc. Student
is encouraged to study privately and practice regularly to achieve
high standards. Freshmen Band will combine with the Concert
and Symphonic Band to [form the "Kamehameha (Maui Campus)
Warrior Marching Band"] perform at parades, athletic events,
and marching festivals and competitions. Attendance at all rehearsals
and performances is required.
Symphonic Band [4212]
Prerequisites:
Audition or Band Director's approval
Symphonic Band is designed for the outstanding
musician to explore, perform, and study the more advanced concert
band literature. Student must demonstrate a higher level of
proficiency on his or her designated instrument. The course
offers the student the opportunity to continue development in
tone production, music literacy, critical listening, experession,
ensemble, communication, eartraining, and self-discipline. Student
will have the opportunity to perform in school concerts, compete
at the state and district festivals, and national honor groups.
Student will be exposed to professional performers including
live performances by guest artists and ensembles, and audio
and video recordings. Student is encouraged to study privately
and practice regularly to achieve high standards. Symphonic
Band will combine with the Concert Band and Freshmen
to [form the "Kamehameha (Maui Campus) Warrior Marching
Band"] perform at parades, athletic events, and marching
festivals and competitions. Attendance at all rehearsals and
performances is required.
